Well I know it's already February and my last journal was in September last year but it's never too late to start a new journal :D The last weeks I've been browsing the photography section here on dA and found some great pictures and artists!
Before presenting you my selection I wanted to tell you what's been going on in my photography life the last months. In early January I spent a day in Amsterdam which is a beautiful city. I really liked the canals and the houses there. And also the weather was great for a visit and to get some nice shots. For quite a long time now I was trying to find a way to get these warm colors to my pictures and I finally found a quite comfortable way to get them. Here's an example
Colors by Roman89

Now I'm waiting for spring to see some colorful plants and stuff outside again. At the moment everything is just grey :/
I also bought my first GoPro because I'm really into timelapses at the moment and the new GoPro offers me a great and easy way to create them. I know the D800 has a timelapse feature as well but the GoPro is less to carry and more versatile to mount somewhere. I don't need to carry my heavy tripod with me when I use the GoPro. And there's no shutter sound every second which can be quite annoying but I think that's just a first world problem :D
If you're interested in my timelapses here's one of my first ones

You're welcome to subscribe to my channel for upcoming videos.

So now here are my first features of 2015! May it be a great year for all you out there!

Big THANK YOU!

Yesterday I checked my dA messages and I had quite a few new favourites on this picture:
Rhein in Flammen (Rhine in Flames) 2014 V by Roman89
I was wondering why and thought "maybe I got a Daily Deviation" but I wouldn't expect one on this picture. Then I clicked on the picture and under it there was this beautiful box which said "Daily Deviation"! I was so surprised and really happy because it was my first DD :happybounce:  And the best thing was that I got it on my birthday :)

:bademoticon: So now here is my big THANK YOU for all your favourites, comments, llama badges etc.! :bademoticon:

During the next days I will try to thank many of you individually by checking out your galleries, giving favourites or watch your profiles but it will take a lot of time.

The last days I found some amazing pics here on dA and I wanted to share them with you! I'll also write some words to each image why I like it so much. So here we go:

Storm Flare by jbrum
This photo is great! The perspective, the deep blue colors which give a nice contrast to the white splashes and foam and also the sharpness is really good. It must have been quite hard to get a shot like this.

This image has a very nice balance between light and shadow. I love the contrast between the warm colors of the sun and the cold blue colors of the sky and the water!

This photo is also a great composition of light and shadow with a great contrast between the green grass and the dark sky!
Iceland landscapes pt. XII by TheChosenPesssimist
I love pics from Iceland and I've seen many of them. This is one of the best! I'd love to go there some day...
Grintovec summit towards Mt. Kocna by BerarAdrian
Great perspective, great light, great sharpness and great colors!
Tartaruga Volante by MauriDiving
Very nice underwater shot of a turtle!
Wegelnburg by EmmmBeee
Very good composition and light! The view over the landscape is just stunning!
smooth by kleinerEngl
And the last one: I really like the warm colors and the softness of this pic. Very lovely bokeh!

New camera!

4 min read
Two weeks ago I received my new camera! The Nikon D800. Since the end of June I was thinking about upgrading from my Fuji S5 to the D800 for several reasons:
  • Better Autofocus: I was shooting a wedding and on many pics the autofocus was not where it was supposed to be and I was really disappointed by that. The D800 in comparison has an incredibly good autofocus
  • The Display: The display on my S5 is really small and dark which makes it hard to check the focus, sharpness etc. especially when it's very bright outside. The display of the D800 is much bigger and brighter.
  • The speed: The S5 is a really slow camera when it comes to viewing pictures and zooming in. The D800 is much faster although the files are much bigger
  • ISO Performance: The Fuji can go up to ISO 3200 but the images are quite bad when you really use it. I tried to use a maximum ISO of 800 because after that the quality became too bad. Of course it's better to have a sharp image with noise than an unsharp image with less noise but for me this was not satisfying. The ISO performance of the D800 is incredible! I did not expect it to be that good! Now I can take photos with ISOs above 1.600 without worrying about bad quality.
  • The Megapixels: I never thought that anyone would need a camera with 36MP but the D800 convinced me that it can be quite useful. The Fuji only had 6MP and when it came to cropping  the resolution became smaller and smaller so I tried to crop as little as possible. When I cropped one of my pics from the D800 I was curious which resolution the image would still have afterwards and I was surprised! I still had a resolution of 6MP! It is also incredible how far I can zoom into a picture and it's still sharp!
  • The full frame sensor: For years I was fascinated by the effect of a full frame sensor on the pictures. It's really hard to describe how they differ from the smaller sensors but to me the images look much clearer.
  • Video function: The last years I have become curious about shooting videos with DSLRs especially after discovering Devin Graham's youtube channel (aka devinsupertramp). When the first DSLRs with video function came out I thought "who needs that? DSLRs are made for photographing" but some day I realised how good they are. I'm still not sure if I will use this function seriously but it's nice to have.
  • Integrated sensor cleaning: Very nice feature of the D800 which my Fuji does not have.
  • Virtual Horizon: I'm really impressed by this feature! It might be one of the most useful features for me because many of my pics were uneven. It works great and I don't have to even my pictures later on.
The only negative aspect of the D800 so far was that I could only use one of my three lenses but I got the Nikon AF-S 24-85 VR which is a great lens! I also got some old manual lenses from my aunt. The picture of Eltz Castle II was taken with an old Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and the firework picture was taken with the 24-85.
